Hazardous Area System Upgrade – Refinery Tank Cleaning Project

Industry: Oil & Gas

Hazardous Area System Upgrade

The Client

  • Industry: Industrial Services (Oil & Gas Sector)
  • Location: Geelong, Victoria
  • Type of Facility: Major Oil Refinery

A major industrial cleaning contractor engaged to perform tank cleaning works at a large refinery required their electrical system to meet strict hazardous area compliance standards before being approved for site use.

The Operational Challenge

The client’s equipment was required to operate within a hazardous area environment subject to rigorous refinery safety and compliance requirements.

However, their existing system did not meet the required Australian EX standards for use on site. Without certification and documented compliance, the equipment could not be deployed — placing the project schedule and commercial outcomes at risk.

The system needed to be assessed, upgraded, and certified in accordance with AS/NZS 60079 before being approved for operation within the refinery.

Objectives

The client required:

  • Assessment of existing equipment against Australian hazardous area standards
  • Rectification of non-compliant wiring and components
  • Update and verification of the hazardous area dossier
  • Full compliance sign-off in accordance with AS/NZS 60079
  • Approval for safe use within a live refinery environment

Our Solution

We managed the project from assessment through to final certification, including:

  1. Comprehensive review of the existing hazardous area installation
  2. Updating and formalising the hazardous area dossier
  3. Rewiring and replacement of non-compliant cables and components
  4. Verification of correct installation practices in accordance with AS/NZS 60079
  5. Final inspection, testing, and compliance sign-off

All works were carried out to ensure the system met refinery-level safety expectations and regulatory requirements.

Key Client Benefits

  1. Full compliance with AS/NZS 60079 hazardous area standards
  2. Reduced project risk through professional assessment and rectification
  3. Updated hazardous area dossier and documentation
  4. Approval for operation within a high-risk refinery environment
  5. Confidence in safe, compliant system performance

The Result

The client received a fully compliant EX-rated system approved for operation within the refinery’s hazardous area environment.
With certification completed and documentation in order, the equipment was successfully deployed on site, enabling the client to proceed with their tank cleaning works without compliance-related delays.
