A major Australian airport undergoing significant infrastructure upgrades required a new system to manage taxi movements within its passenger pick-up zones.

The Operational Challenge

As part of broader infrastructure works, the airport needed a reliable system to signal when specific taxi types (including Maxi Cabs) were required at designated gates.

Two gate locations were positioned at varying distances from the operator station — one approximately 100 metres away with clear line-of-sight, and another approximately 500 metres away with multiple building obstructions

The solution needed to be wireless, robust in an outdoor environment, resistant to interference, and simple for operators to use — while avoiding disruption to airport operations during installation.

Objectives

The client required:

  • A reliable system to signal taxis at two separate gate locations
  • A wireless solution capable of overcoming distance and physical obstructions
  • High-visibility outdoor indicators suitable for harsh conditions
  • A simple, intuitive operator interface
  • Minimal disruption during installation

Our Solution

We designed and delivered a fully integrated Taxi Area Indicator Light System incorporating:

  1. A Siemens PLC-based control system
  2. Industrial-grade long-range wireless communication (up to 5,000m capability)
  3. RF communication for the short-range gate
  4. 5G/SMS relay technology to overcome interference and obstruction at the longer-range gate
  5. High-visibility IP-rated LED beacons suitable for outdoor conditions
  6. Marine-grade stainless steel enclosures for corrosion resistance in exposed areas

The system was prefabricated and fully tested off-site prior to delivery to minimise on-site disruption and reduce operational risk during installation
